Is Precise Worth to Try?

I know it’s kind of late to post about Precise Pangolin. But still, it’s worth to talk about this long awaited release because Precise is a Long Term Support release which means it will get longer updates, bug fixes, and security fixes. It’s a great choice for people who doesn’t want to mess too much with his OS. Just regular casual user. However I’m also looking for Quantal. I’m going to dual boot both Precise and Quantal. And don’t forget I also wait for Fedora Beefy Miracle.
Back to topic. Is Precise worth to try? My answer is precisely yes. Why? Because Precise is a LTS. Because Precise is much more stable than Natty and a bit over than Oneiric. Okay, with more bugs too. Because Precise has hot corner option (I depend on this since it’s faster for me than alt + tab combination). Because the brand new version of most packages (Firefox, Gnome, Unity, Ubuntu Tweak, KDE SC, etc). Because it’s precisely accurate to fill the position of Lucyd. But not Oneiric.

Downloading Ubuntu Precise

I know it’s quite a while since Precise released. But due to the server overload and lack of fast connection, I haven’t succeed downloading the file. So I still have no chance to make a review. It’s annoying to see your download failed after a bunch of time spent just to download it. Sure you know how do I feel now.

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Precise Pangolin Released

The long awaited Ubuntu Precise now available for download. Finally, after 2 years of development, 3 pre-LTS releases, hundreds of version updates, thousands of complains, millions of bug fixes, it is now ready to spread its sticky tongue to catch much more pirate ants to migrate to open source softwares. Will the Pangolin be able to fulfill the expectation? Only the time can prove.

12.10, The Q Release

Sometimes ago, Mark Shuttleworth announced the name of Ubuntu 12.10 release codenamed QQ. It’s hard to spell and hard to pronounced. It will be called Quantal Quetzal.
Quetzal is a colorful bird of Meso America. Specifically Mexico, Maya, and Guatemala. It is Guatemalan national bird and Mayan sacred bird. I don’t know why Mr. Shuttleworth chose this name due of its complexity. But I hope it’s good enough to be a replacement for my Onnie. Mavie and Onnie are the best releases so far.

Foolish Indonesian Minister of Education

I read a blog post about the MOU between this foolish guy (being foolish since forever) and Microsoft (the post in Bahasa Indonesia can be found here at http://bit.ly/nJTsii). After I read the post, I can only say ‘RIP freedom in education’.
This MOU makes the curriculum of education only teach Microsoft’s products and other paid software (which always expensive).
Mr. M. Noob made excuse that this MOU will make students more creative. But you know it already that it makes nonsenses. Proprietary softwares make student more creative? Bullshit! The only one thing that they do is make their pockets even thicker.
Stupid minister who was hated since the start only makes Indonesia even more retard.
But the fight isn’t ended yet. It only just begun. We have to fight even harder to make people know and understand the power of free/libre open source softwares. The power of together-ness. Are you ready to fight? I am!

Eksis A La Ababil ‘Bebe Addict’

Beberapa waktu lalu, aku dibuat tertawa sekeras-kerasnya dalam hati mendengar pernyataan salah seorang ‘bebe addict’ yang bisa di #nomention. Dia bilang bahwa bebe yang dia punya sekarang adalah sebagai sarana ‘ngeksis’. Yang bikin aku tertawa terbahak adalah, pentingkah eksis di bebe?
Jadi teringat beberapa tahun silam lagi heboh benda yang bernama Internet Relay Chat. Sebuah sarana ‘ngeksis’ jaman baheula. Banyak teman-temanku yang menghabiskan banyak waktu dengan nongkrong di warnet berjam-jam. Hah? Warnet? Jadoel! Wkwkw.. Hei, ini bukan untuk ditertawai! Karena waktu itu komputer masih mahal dan internet masih langka, jangan heran bila banyak orang yang harus ke warnet sekedar untuk chatting.
Tren chatting berlanjut dengan yang namanya YM alias Yahoo Messenger. Banyak temanku yang merasa kurang gaul bila belum punya YM. Aku? Biasa aja.
Tren kembali bergulir. IRC dan YM mulai tenggelam walaupun tidak hilang (IRC masih dipakai oleh komunitas opensource). Tergantikan oleh adanya platform social network. Diawali dengan Friendster alias FS (aku tidak punya akun FS), kemudian dilanjutkan dengan Facebook alias FB yang pada akhirnya mampu menenggelamkan Friendster (Friendster sekarang menjelma menjadi platform social gaming).
Mengekor kesuksesan Facebook, kini menjamur seabrek situs-situs social network. Mulai yang berbasis lokasi (4square), microblog (Twitter), foto (Flickr, Instagram), minat (Pinterest), dan masih banyak lagi.
Bisa saja suatu situs ataupun device sedang booming. Tapi siapa yang berani menjamin
mereka akan bertahan selamanya? Contoh pasti adalah Friendster dan Nokia dengan Symbian. Dulu Friendster adalah situs yang sangat populer. Tapi sekarang? Kita sudah tahu. Demikian juga dengan Symbian. Pernah jadi sistem operasi mobile terpopuler di bumi, sekarang nasibnya sudah di ujung tanduk.
Jadi, apakah ngeksis di bebe penting? Apa yang akan terjadi saat bebe sudah tidak laku? Kita sudah tahu jawabannya.

First Impress on Precise Pangolin Beta 2 Gnome Shell Cancelled

After a long consideration, I decided to cancel the last part of First Impress on Gnome Shell. Why? Because of the final release date is closer and I think I’ll review the final instead of the Beta.

Precise Beta 2′s Review Delayed

I know that I promised to post last(?) part of Precise Beta 2′s preview yesterday. but today I really has been so busy that I can’t touch my StoneHenge (name of my notebook) to give you some review. so, I think I have to delay this post until I can touch StoneHenge again. Sorry..

First Impress of Ubuntu Precise Pangolin Beta 2 Pt. 2

Continuing last post about first impress of Precise Pangolin Beta 2 about the start-up and shut down time, login screen, and Ubuntu Tweak, this post will mainly review the desktop.
The default session is Unity Shell (being default since Natty release a year ago) listed as Ubuntu and Ubuntu 2D in desktop environment choose. Precise’s Unity comes with new feature called HUD (I still don’t know what it does) and still supported Lens (little app to make searching experience a better one). But personally, I prefer Gnome Shell over Unity due to Unity’s lack of theme-ing. So I cannot say much about Unity.
Surely Unity’s a great improvement with the dash and launcher. But Gnome Shell do ways better in speed (Gnome Shell starts faster than Unity) and the ability to be customized with tons of themes, a huge bunch of extensions, and greater Gnome community. Unity’s lacks of theme-ing made me so bored. Besides, the global menu makes the ‘file-insert-view-format’ menu bar disappear to the top panel than stay in the app’s own window instead. This thing can make potential confusions to new users.
Next thing is the system setting. There are new icons separating the setting category from appearance, system, hardware, an so on. In the appearance section, we have the chance to resize the launcher by default with no Ubuntu Tweak needed. New entries that came to Unity section of Ubuntu Tweak (I forgot to mention this before) are hot corner option (the action that will be executed once you touch the corner of the screen with the pointer), the HUD activation, auto hide launcher, and dash color. Tomorrow I will give review from Gnome Shell side of view.
